We are very sad to hear of the passing of Paul O’Grady aka Lily Savage.
We will remember Paul fondly as a pioneer in the world of drag bringing it to mainstream TV and into everyone’s homes.
And since then he has gone on to touch our hearts in so many ways, not forgetting POGS Dogs at Battersea and has tirelessly worked with many charities.
And we will never forget the historical quote when the Royal Vauxhall Tavern was raided in January 1987 by police with the excuse that “people were drunk on the premises” as a flimsy disguise while attempting to intimidate the LGBTQ+ community. The police turned up in rubber gloves as this was during the height of the AIDs crisis and our Paul Who was currently on stage as Lily Savage quipped “well it looks like we’ve got help with the washing up” – Paul was arrested whilst still dressed as Lily Savage.
Today we mourn and celebrate a trailblazer of drag, a kind and funny person who loved animals above humans, Paul has been so many things to so many people, let’s follow what he has left behind, kindness, care, fun and laughter and let’s spread it as we remember Paul O’Grady.
