CARROTS ARE ORANGE FOR A POLITICAL REASON! When someone says that food has nothing to do with politics ask if that person knows the history of the carrot they use at home and at the very least have fun with the reactions after explaining to them what We will reveal to you below.
For many centuries the colors of carrots varied, ranging from purple to white, passing through red and yellow. Until the 16th century came, and they turned orange!

The reason ? The Dutch Politics.
In the 16th century, Dutch farmers grew orange carrots in honor of Guilherme of Orange-Nassau—who led the struggle for Dutch independence—and the color took on.

One thousand years of yellow, white and purple carrot history has been wiped out in one generation. While some scholars doubt that orange carrots existed before the 16th century, they now form the basis of most commercial crops worldwide.

Presumably, crossbreeding between eastern (purple), western (white, red) and perhaps wild carrots led to the formation of the orange-rooted carrot subspecies.

Whatever the origins, the Dutch Long Orange carrot, first described in writing in 1721, is the ancestor of the orange Horn carrot varieties so plentiful today.
